Hivos is horrified by the gruesome murder of David Haines by Islamic State militants. Haines was working for the French aid organisation ACTED and was kidnapped in March 2013 in Syria, shortly into his assignment. Our thoughts go out to the families and colleagues of Haines. Hivos and ACTED cooperate within Alliance2015, a strategic network of eight European non-government organisations engaged in humanitarian and development activities.
Haines was part of ACTED’s emergency response team responsible for providing humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees in the Atmeh camp near the Turkish border. He was highly appreciated by his colleagues for his generosity, commitment and professionalism.
“The horrible assassination of David, an aid worker, goes against all humanitarian principles and is a crime against humanity. It will not detract us from our commitment to alleviate populations’ suffering. The perpetrators of this barbaric crime should be brought to justice,” says ACTED in a statement on its website.
