Resource Of Open Minds (R.O.O.M)

To diversify dialogue and debate in society.

Middle East and North Africa, Eastern Africa, Southern Africa

Freedom of expression is the main measure of openness in a society, but globally the space for free expression is shrinking, which in turn reduces the diversity and independence of makers, media, content, channels and audiences.

Art and media, however, have the power to question dominant structures in society, propose alternatives and bring about change. So R.O.O.M supports the creative work of a new generation of artists, makers, musicians and critical content producers around the world who strive for openness and lead the resistance to shrinking civic space. R.O.O.M. provides financial support for the production of work and safe online and offline environments where they can create alternative narratives, question the status quo and imagine new realities through their practice. It also organizes training and events and facilitates a research and experimentation program for mid-career makers.

Results so far

R.O.O.M. started in 2017 and is in its initial phase. So far it has supported a variety of young makers of critical cultural and media productions, including rappers in Zanzibar challenging gender stereotypes and a new game in Kenya examining the effects of neoliberalism. In Zimbabwe, it hosted a Think Tank workshop for creative hubs from Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
